Cross-border Justice
October 2009
Developed in partnership with the Governments of South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, the Cross-border Justice Act, commences Sunday, 1 November.
The legislation enables police, courts and correctional services to operate across the borders of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) region. This will lead to quicker investigations, improved safety and better outcomes for victims.
The Cross-border Justice Scheme was developed to address the complex justice issues and needs of people in the NPY region that straddles the borders of South, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It addresses concerns raised by local community groups and is consistent with the Recommendations of Commissioner Ted Mullighan’s report into sexual abuse in the APY Lands.
The Cross-border Justice Act applies to anyone;
- suspected, alleged or found to have committed an offence in a Cross-Border region;
- arrested in the region; and/or
- that usually lives in the region at the time of the offence or when they were arrested.
